Manager : Ashley Mason

“Recognised by many as the single greatest player of his generation Ashley was first noticed at the tender age of 9 batting for his school side. Having amassed 15 Gray Nicholls Powerspots for the same number of unbeaten centuries in the balmy summer of ’89 he was selected for a gentleman’s 11 to face the touring West Indies test side. Figures of 212n.o. off 53 balls and 200 n.o. off 50 balls were matched by bowling figures of 1 over 6 wickets for no runs. Desmond Haynes described the performance as breathtaking and coined the phrase “a right handed David Gower” as every run off the bat was a four through mid off. Michael Holding described the bowling performance as fierce without compare and with more hostility than had ever been witnessed at Test level. After his move south at the age of 11 Ashley signed for the highly ranked “Cross” at Gerrards Cross. Batting on what was described by many as a batting paradise Ashley enjoyed 7 straight seasons and retired from the game at the age of 18 unbeaten at any level of the game. His figures made remarkable reading: Since retiring from the game Ashley took on the managerial responsibilities at top Middlesex League outfit Finchley. Inspirational from the start his first match in charge resulted in a crushing victory away to local rivals Hampstead. The following six years yielded 12 trophies for the North London side with much more silverware still to come. When asked by Finchley legend Mike Milton what was the secret to his success Ashley simply answered “Never get out and never waste a delivery by not taking a wicket”. These quiet words of wisdom are now ingrained into the Finchley mentality and even at Colts level are instilled as minimum standards. “A true gentleman in the proper sense of the word and someone who every player in this club looks up to with respect. His inspirational management style gets the very best out of every player in his team and when it comes to teaching technique he is the human textbook. This cricket club will never be the same again since he walked through the door 7 years ago and for that we are truly thankful.” – Mike Milton 2009.
