Match report
U13 Colts: Edmonton vs Finchley 30th June. League Game 8
Match notes
Many thanks to Bob for scoring.
Finchley skipper - Ferdy
Edmonton won the toss and elected to bowl first.
After a player pulled out sick we thought we were going to have to play with ten men but Toby came to the rescue – playing up three years – well done!
We were put in to bat and opened with Raj and Ross on a good wicket and a field with short boundaries. A hostile first over produced a maiden for Edmonton but this was to be no low scoring match. 9 from the second over, 16 from the third and 13 from the fourth were more typical of what was ahead. Both Raj and Ross looked in fine form and after 10 overs they‘d put on 87. They continued hitting the ball to all parts of the ground until we retired Raj when he reached 60 with the score on about 120. It was an excellent innings by Raj, his best of the season and his came off just 49 balls including 11 fours and 1 six. Seb came in to partner Ross who was caught at mid-off shortly afterwards for a good 46 off 28 balls including 2 sixes and 4 fours. If Edmonton thought the run rate would decrease without the openers they were in for a surprise, as Seb set about the bowling attack with gusto. His superb innings of 59 not out off just 25 balls included four sixes and 8 fours. Joining him was Ferdie who came in and got 8 off 4 balls, Harry 6 from 9 balls and Connor, 2 not out off three balls. All of this added up to a staggering 212 for 3 from our 20 overs and what was especially pleasing was the way batsmen took quick singles to get the biggest hitters on strike.
The Edmonton bowlers were good quality and this huge total was the result of excellent batting. With 212 on the board we felt confident but were aware that Edmonton had some good cricketers in their team so Bob and I emphasised again the importance of accurate bowling and good fielding.
Duane and Seb opened the bowling and Duane clean bowled an opener off the fourth ball bringing the tall Yussuf to join Jack at the crease. This pair could bat and started to increase the run rate with Yussuf especially finding the boundary. Seb’s pace and accuracy meant he only went for 15 off his three overs however after 5 overs Edmonton were on 39-1 and putting up a good fight. Luke bowled one over before we turned to Harry and Raj. The batsmen went after Harry and Jack hit three 4’s in a row during his second over before trying one big shot too many. He came down track to smash one but was deceived by the spin and quick hand work from Ross meant he was stumped when on 34. Raj bowled really well from the other end and the required run rate rose, though Yussuf still played many expansive shots including a huge six off Harry into the nearby bowling green. He responded well with his next 10 balls going for just 4 runs. A strong drive towards Duane took a bobble and struck him on the side of the head as he went to cut it off and sadly Duane was forced to retire. The team applauded him off and fortunately he was OK by the next day. After Raj and Harry finished, Edmonton were on 108-2 off fourteen, when Peter came on and bowled two good overs. Ferdie (released from wicket keeping duties for good behaviour) came on to bowl for the first time this season and had an immediate impact. He bowled beautifully and it was no surprise when he had Omar well caught by Raj on the boundary and then snapped up a good caught and bowled chance with his next ball. He nearly got his hat-trick the first ball of his second over but only had to wait to the next ball before claiming his third victim – this time another good stumping by Ross. Figures of 3 for 7 off two overs speak for themselves and also show the depth of talent we have in the squad as a whole. Jamie bowled an accurate over and Toby had a batsman caught by Harry off the final over of the game. Edmonton finished on a very creditable 152-6 off their 20 overs with Yussuf still at the crease unbeaten on 55.
The bowling was very good and there were so many examples of good fielding - two near run out’s, almost another stumping and an extraordinary one-handed catch by Raj sadly just the wrong side of the boundary rope! Connor patrolled the boundary brilliantly and every single member of the team again saved many runs and ensured we protected our total.
It was a great match and credit must go to both sides for the quality of the cricket and the competitive, but always respectful way the game was played.
This was the final league game of the season and whether we come first or second in the league will probably depend on the weather. We have qualified for the summer cup competition and if we have the players available we should put in a strong performance.
Result: Edmonton U13 vs Finchley U13: Finchley won by 60 runs.
