Match report
U13 Colts: Finchley vs Potters Bar 4th May. League Game 2
Match notes
Many thanks to Chrissy for scoring and for providing the excellent stats section at the end.
Finchley skipper - Ferdy
Potters Bar won the toss and elected to bat first.
An absolutely freezing cold evening with a strong, bitter wind was the background to this most difficult of fixtures. The match was reduced to 16 overs per side to ensure we would finish before the already poor light actually became dangerous. Jonny and Duane opened the bowling with good pace but the Potters Bar openers still managed to get 24 off the first four overs. Seb came on and clean bowled one of the openers in his first over. He bowled an accurate, hostile spell of four overs and deservedly returned figures of 1 for 13 off 4. At the other end, everyone who bowled into the wind found it difficult to control and with Luke McGee, one of their Middlesex Colts now batting, Potters Bar took full advantage. Luke’s powerful innings of 47 off 33 balls included five 4’s and one 6 as he dispatched our bowlers around the ground. After 12 overs Potters Bar were on 79 for 1. Harry came on and in his first over, Louis took a good catch to remove the remaining opener. At the other end, Will enticed Luke into coming out of his crease and a nifty piece of glove-work by Ferdie earned him his first stumping for Finchley. Will clean bowled the new batsman in the final over but Potters Bar’s score of 110 for 4 off 16 overs was formidable, especially given their strong bowling attack.
Seb was the pick of the bowlers and Ferdie again showed good form behind the stumps however, some of our out-fielding was certainly not our best. Although we gave away 35 extras, Potters Bar later gave away 32, which to some extent is a reflection of the cold, windy conditions.
Faced with a large total, and missing a couple of strong batsmen, I then made a tactical error by telling our batters to play too conservatively. Our openers, Seb and Ferdie, batted really well against a hostile bowling attack and both played the controlled innings asked of them. At the start of the 10th over we were actually ahead of Potters Bar (at the same point in their innings), but we knew it was in the last few overs that Potters Bar really built their total. As our openers became more expansive Ferdie was out, caught, having made 13 and Louis came in at No 3. He batted solidly but despite Seb continuing to play nicely at the other end we could not match the increasing run-rate. The bowling of McGee and Fordham (between them they bowled 4 overs for 12 runs) took the game away from us and James Illot also bowled very tidely. Seb was out for 28, caught, whilst trying to push ther run rate in the 14th over. Harry came in and made a few quick runs in the remaining overs but the match was beyond us by then and we finished on 84-2, 26 runs shy of Potters Bar’s total.
Overall it was a good batting effort against the best attack we will face in the league this season. I probably should have shown more faith in our batting ability, and I will learn from this for the future. Last season I experienced the result of losing early wickets to Potters Bar and was fearful of a repeat.
It is always disappointing to lose but Potters Bar are a very strong, well drilled side, whose fielding was sharp and focused. The match was played in a good spirit and included good cricket from both sides. I’m already looking forward to the return match as I know that we can beat them if we have all our players available and we bat, bowl and field with discipline.
Thanks to the whole team for a decent effort in dreadful conditions and to all those supporters brave enough to watch.
Result: Potters Bar U13’s beat Finchley U13’s by 26 runs.
